Comfort + Ambiguity
wearing the future
Cori Champagne
Clothing is our first home. It projects identity, produces comfort, and offers protection. As the world imposes more and constant change, I create clothing for conditions no longer comfortably futuristic. Garments convert to shelters; clothing anticipates emergency events. What can be worn can become the architecture of sanctuary.
My work addresses the climate crisis from a tactical point of view. It imagines that abrupt circumstances should be prepared for, and solutions developed for the needs of shelter, mobility, and preparedness – and that clothing worn could transform and provide it. Based on collected research, and with an emphasis on the female participant, I create hand-made apparel from readily available materials, for a changing world.
